Happy Waitangi Day

February 5

Tomorrow is Waitangi Day in New Zealand so there was a huge celebration in preparation for it tonight. New Zealanders of all ethnic backgrounds and creeds gather to commemorate the first signing of the Treaty at Waitangi in 1840. Waitangi Day is a generally optimistic focus for debate on national identity and multiculturalism in New Zealand, and at the Treaty Grounds a peaceful family-oriented celebration prevails. . This is a huge holiday that represents New Zealand’s independence; basically equivalent to our 4th of July.

We went to church, watched Harry Potter, ate lots and lots of Tim Tams and spaghetti and got to watch fireworks. What a great day.
