A Whole New World

My Class has started something new. Every morning (as part of our morning routine) we say a prayer type of thing called a Karakia in Maori. Here is what it is:

E Te Atua
manakitia matou
            Arahina matou
Ia matou mahi
I Tenei ra
I runga
I tou Ingoa tapu
Amine

Translation:

Heavenly Father bless us.
Lead us in our work today.
In your holy name,
Amen

I think it is os interesting that they can refer to God so much in their schools. Some of the schools here even have Bible Study as a class. I love it.

I have also learned a lot of other Maori words and phrases. Here are some of the things I’ve learned:

Body Parts:
  • Upoko- Head
  • Waewae- Foot
  • Puku- tummy
  • Kumu- Belly button
  • Tinana- Body

Phrases:

  • Whakarongo- Listen
  • Etu- Stand up
  • Anoho- sit down
  • Awhina mai- help me/us
  • Me te aroha e- with love

Every morning when I call the roll we use a different greeting from all of the countries in our classroom.

Greetings:

  • Talofa Lava-Samoan
  • Kia ora- Maori
  • Fakalofa- Niuean
  • Kia orana- Cook Islands
  • Malo le lei- Tongan
  • Bula vanaka- Fijian
  • Aloha- Hawaiian
