Muriwai

A few weeks ago Phyllis took us to Muriwai Beach. This beach was so different from the other beaches we had been to. Muriwai is home to a wide range of birds but it is the gannets (takapu) that most visitors come to see. We walked to each of the viewing platforms to watch the gannets. The birds return here between July and October to re-establish contact with their life-long mates. These birds look so much like seagulls. The only noticeable difference is the yellow patches they have on them.

Not only does it have gannets it is also a black sand beach. I had never been to a black sand beach before so I got pretty excited to see it.

Muriwai is also one of the most dangerous beaches in all of New Zealand because of its strong tides and currents. It has these flags that are on the beach that designate the safe swimming area. If something happens to the swimmers outside of the flag lines the lifeguards aren’t going to come rescue you because it is so dangerous.

Phyllis was sos excited to bring us here. I love it when she gets excited to show us different things around Auckland. She is just the sweetest lady!
