After waiting and waiting I finally got on a flight, that
was 13hrs long, and arrived in New Zealand! After we went through customs there
was a wall that graciously welcomed us to the country. I was so excited to
finally arrive that I couldn’t resist taking a picture with it.
Then Kirsten and I met Phyllis! She is such a sweet lady!
Her home is cute and cozy. You can tell she really likes gardening because her
front and back yards are perfectly trim. I got pretty excited that she had a
legit lemon tree in her backyard.
Here are a couple pictures of Phyllis home! Kirsten and I have a simple bedroom, but we are still privileged to have objects of comfort. I have a ginormous white bear and Kirsten has a sweet doll with orange yarn hair.
As we were eating breakfast she introduced Kirsten and me to
a few very traditional New Zealand things to eat. First, was Weetbix. Weetbix is a cereal that is
basically a block of wheat. All you do is add milk and a bit of sugar. It
tastes kind of like Mini Wheats without the icing on top. Since I’m a huge fan
of Mini Wheats I thoroughly enjoy Weetbix.
The next she introduced us to was called marmite. This one
isn’t as delicious as Weetbix. Essentially, it is a spread for crackers or bread that has the
consistency of honey. Kirsten and
I decided it tastes a lot like an extremely salty, gooey, soy sauce. I learned when Phyllis said spread it very
thin; she really meant spread it very thin. I’ve come to the conclusion it must be an acquired taste.
